An essential stop on the tour of Austin's coffeehouses, the 503 is one of the friendliest. Despite being jammed into a miniature stripmall near 1st and Oltorf, it doesn't feel like it once you're inside - the atmosphere is bohemian without being pretentious or exclusive, and it's dark without being gloomy (most tables have individual lights). There are some large tables that are great for drawing or writing on.
Unlike most Austin coffee spots, the 503 offers a "bottomless mug" for about the price of two ordinary mugs. A terrific benefit for those planning on doing long hours of work or study. There's plenty of room both indoors and out, and the regulars are friendly.
The coffee itself is tasty. Nothing to write home about, but never disappointing. The prices are Austin-Standard, or just a little below. |
